Powerless by Lauren Roberts

Hey nation! For my first book review, I thought I’d do one about my all time favorite book, Powerless.

WARNING: SPOILERS!!

The book itself starts with our FMC Paedyn inside a chimney. The story then expands, explaining the reason she is stealing from a family, and her biggest secret. Paedyn is an ordinary in a world full of elites and the kingdom of Ilya, ordinaries are killed. It is introduced early on of a lie that was spread throughout the kingdom that ordinaries contained some sort of virus that makes it so that they don’t get powers.

Paedyn, who has been been an orphan since she was thirteen, was taught to fake her powers so she doesn’t die. She learned the skill of finding out about peoples lives based on things they had on their person and named her skill the ‘psychic’ ability.

Paedyn also has a friend, Adena, and together they live in a fort until one day when Paedyn saves a prince from his death.

This is where we are introduced to Kai Azer, prince and future enforcer of Ilya.

The story revolves around these two characters and their journey through the purging trials (an event that happens five years) and Paedyns role in the resistance (a group of ordinaries trying to prove they are not plagued).

In all, I really loved this book with a sort of forced proximity (one of my favorite troupes) and forbidden romance. Many people would categorize Powerless as an enemies to lovers, but throughout the book, you notice both the characters don’t actually hate each other, they just can’t be together.

The scenes itself were really beautiful and I love the way Kai was written. His chapters were pure poetry though sometimes through the book I felt as if he lacked is own personality. Parts of the book make me feel as if the only reason anyone cared for Kai as a character was because of Paedyn, which makes sense since he is technically the love interest, but I really would have liked to see more internal conflict and story for him that didn’t include Paedyn.

The book ends with Paedyn’s friend Adena dying and the resistance breaking into the arena in which the last trial ended. While everyone is fighting, Paedyn runs away to her room to retrieve the last gift she got from her dead friend, and when she goes outside to run away, she finds herself in front of the king of Ilya (Kai’s father).

They then get into a fight which eventually ends in his death and Kai arriving just as it happens. And thats when my least favorite troupe happens. Miscommunication. Kai thinks Paedyn killed his father as an act of rebellion, when really she did it to protect her own life, even having the scars to prove it. Of course, not wanting to die, Paedyn runs away while Kai watches.

Kitt (Kai’s brother and the new king) then sends Kai on a mission to catch Paeydn which starts the second book.

In all, I did really enjoy this book would highly recommend for any fantasy readers! Personally, I love fantasy and am a fan of romance making this one of my top books. The whole series was really eventful and I finished it in only a few days (Though the fourth book was really slow paced).

To conclude, this books gets five out of five rain drops so if you like romance and fantasy like me, you HAVE to read it!
